M.D.C. 2003 – 2007
1979 -
Ron Posner (x-conron)’s anal retentive list: Early December 1979 in Austin, Texas, Kevin Bastin, already a Raul's (the local punk club) regular, bought a PA (two speaker monitors, mixing board, mic and stand) and began practicing vocals. On Christmas Eve, Kevin and I were listening to Patti Smith's Horses LP blasting out of Kevin's PA. Kevin pointed out - “We can do this. Let’s start a rock band and make music just like them.” It seemed so real almost like you could reach out and touch the musicians. We agreed. Kevin bought an Aria Pro II copy of a Mesa Boogie Mark I guitar amp and I bought a 1972 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe goldtop electric guitar.
I had taken classical guitar lessons since 10th grade. In 1979 I was studying at the University of Texas at Austin. I lived in a $125/month garage apartment on Whitis Street, just three blocks from Raul's. I was also into riding road bikes on a regular basis. I was good friends and often rode with Colin Jones (Texas Jr. State Champion). Colin mentioned that he played drums. His father was a drummer in a jazz band and had a spare vintage black Gretsch kit he told Colin he could have.
Dave Dictor was also a UTA student who just moved down from New York inspired by the music of Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Jerry Jeff Walker and others. He had already been in a band in New York called the Solar Pigs with his friends Butchie and Jim Brighton but had a different idea for a band. He had met Gary Floyd, the singer in The Dicks, who had a strong influence on him, and the two became good friends.
Kevin, Dave and I finally met at Raul's Club and soon we decided to start a punk band together. Dave went out and bought a 1972 Gibson SG (modded at Erlewine Guitars) and a Fender silver-face guitar amp. I was going out with Amy Mann at the time so rehearsals were held at her place at 505 East 50th Street. You could play as loud as you wanted any time of the night and day and no one ever complained. At first the band was called the Reejex and soon after it became the Stains. We started out trying to play songs like Blitzkrieg Bop, Psycho Killer and of course our No. 1 hit song written by Dave - John Wayne Was a Nazi.
Original members: David Dictor (guitar), Ron Posner (guitar), Colin Jones (drums), Kevin Bastin (vocals)
Other subsequent members: Amy Mann (vocals), Stephanie (vocals), Andy Delinquent (bass), Grant (bass), Karl Reactor (drums), Frank Mares (bass), Mikey Offender (bass) and Al Schultz (drums), etc.

January 13 - Allan Schultz comes down from Long Island, N.Y. and joins us on drums. Al’s 1975 band B.S.A. (Brodski, Schultz & Alpert) actually wrote I Remember and Someone’s behind You Again in their original versions. Fact: “No matter how good a guitar player you are, you're only as good as your drummer”. Al joining the band gave us that extra level of musicianship, genius, ideas and creativity to become a world class act. Mikey Donaldson from the Offenders joining on bass made it so all the more. All four of us together definitely delivered the goods in spades.

MDC moves to San Francisco, CA. The decision to move to SF was Dave's. He pointed out that we were #1 on Tim Yohannon's KPFA playlist and ranked 37th in our own hometown. The first place we landed when we got to SF was the Food Stamp Office and the next place was the 175 Florida Street Hamm's Brewery “Beer Vats” which was to become our home. Vat Rats owe it to Tom Falkenberry and Nathan for their vision of turning an old beer brewery into rehearsal spaces for bands. Shellee Harper, Aunt Jemimah, Anita Collison, John Lieb, Wild Bill, Tammy Cleveland, Charucki, Josh, Barry Dalive, Bliss Blast - all Vat Rats. MDC, DRI, C2D, The Dicks, Sluglords, Witnesses, etc. - all either lived there or practiced there. In fact, old school Austin punks are probably still pissed off at us since we started the exodus out of Texas to the beer vats.

Early employees were Jayfish (www.alexisneel.com/), Pat Black (still holding a grudge after 20 yrs.), Tammy Cleveland, Jake Phelps (www.thrashermagazine.com/) and Tommy Guerrero. After loosing the lease the shop moved around the corner to 1714 Waller Street, parallel to Haight Street. Ron and Carlos decided to start up Fogtown Skateboards producing their own boards and creating a team of sponsors. Carlos doesn't come up with his share of the money and Ron continues without him. Carlos sues and one year later Ron looses the name and becomes Concrete Jungle. A silk-screening business was opened in the basement. The team was composed of various notables such as Danny Sargeant, Noah Salasnek, Mike Archimedes, Steve Roetter, Jake Phelps, Phil Chen, Mickey Reyes, etc. Early blanks were made by Madrid and later on by Alva. Models included B2D I, Board to Death II (artist - Kevin Clarke), Beast (MoFo), Van Gough, Chick Stick (Dali), Dirty Rotten Imbeciles model, etc. Borgy Copers were also produced and advertised by Bryce Kanights, Tommy and Tony Guerrero, etc. Chris Charucki (www.ratdog.org/) singer for Cause for Alarm and MDC’s long-time roadie was manager at Concrete Jungle.
